Tongariro River

The world renowned Tongariro River in Turangi at the southern end of lake Taupo is also well worth a visit for a night or two. An amazing river to fish in the winter when thousands of trout run from lake Taupo up the river to spawn, it is about a two and a half hour drive if you are based in Napier.

Lake Otamangakau

The ‘Big O’ is probably as well known to overseas anglers seeking a trophy trout as it is to locals. Every year 10 to 14 pound fish are caught. This lake offers exceptional fishing and scenery with views of the mountains close by in the Tongariro National Park. There is some excellent shore line fishing in the summer for sighted brown trout around the lake and in the channels.

My recommendation for fishing this lake is to stay in Turangi and travel by vehicle each day.
